Summer Update

Hey EWBers,

Just wanted to post a quick update on whats been going on so far this summer!

Run to End Poverty
A few of our members participated in the Run to End Poverty, the Scotiabank 1/2 marathon on June 27. In total we raised around $750 for SFU, and about $25000 across Vancouver to support our overseas programs in Malawi!

Western Retreat
Western Retreat is coming up this week, 7 delegates are off to Elk Island Park near Edmonton for a weekend of workshops centered around team and personal development, and building connections to other chapters.

Year Planning
Here’s a couple things to look out for in the fall that EWB is already planning. All of them are forming committees and looking for assistance in the planning stage, if you would like to join the committees please email sfu_at_ewb_dot_ca

- Chill on the Hill concert and beer garden

- Advocacy team and the “Day of Dialog and Action at SFU

- SFU’s Got Talent

- EWBBQs

Overseas Update
Near the end of July we will be having a skype chat with Wayne Miranda, our EWB overseas learning partner. Check out his team’s blog here (Wayne’s last posts were May 13 and 9): http://innovationswithfarmers.wordpress.com/

Also stay tuned in early fall for Junior Fellowship (JF) information. This is a 4 month program in the summer of 2011, where the selected applicant will work overseas with EWB in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Malawi or Zambia with one of our overseas partners.

EWB in the Summer Semester

Thanks to everyone who made this year so fantastic!

Starting in May we have a new exec, and a whole set of new events. Look out for EWB at clubs days in the summer and get ready to participate in activities like Fair Trade outreach and school presentations. There is also Western Retreat, planning needed to make the fall semester spectacular, and starting in October JF applications will commence again so you have lots to look forward to. If you are interested in helping with any of this, just shoot an email to sfu[at]ewb[dot]ca and we look forward to having you help.

Vancouver's Premier International Development Conference: Bridging the Gap 2010

Collaborating for Human Development: The Hidden Power of our Choices

BTG Africa Are you passionate about international development? Maybe you’re a cynic and enjoy debating the impossibility of ending poverty. Or perhaps you’re well established in the field and would like to network and discuss challenging issues with others?

If any of those apply, then there’s no where else you should be on March 27th except at Vancouver’s Premier International Development Conference: Bridging the Gap 2010.

Presented by Engineers Without Borders, this year’s Bridging The Gap will explore the roles of individuals, corporations, NGOs, and government, and how their collaborative actions impact extreme poverty. With the theme “Collaborating for Human Development – the hidden power of our choices,” professional and student delegates will examine the influence of our actions at home, on the development field, in parliament and in boardrooms.

The day will be full of discussion, debate, collaboration, and learning, with workshops and sessions led by an engaging line-up of speakers.

Join 300 passionate students, professionals, and forward-looking Canadians in tackling the greatest challenge of our time.

Halala 2009... A Huge Success!

Halala 2009, our wine and cheese fundraiser, held on Friday., Feb. 6th, was an incredible success! There was about 175 attendees, incredible food, a fantastic dance performance, and much more. The event raised about $4000, which will go along way in supporting Mike Henrey on his placement this summer. This year’s event was a huge improvement from last year and we are all very pleased with how it went.

Congratulations to the Halala team for pulling off an incredible event: Hamdiya and crew – Owen, Rachel and Anthony – for their super-human efforts in making this possible; Sean, Dan, and the kitchen volunteers for their incredible food; Jack for coordinating the website and his brilliant design work. They have put countless hours into this event over the last couple of months and their hard work has definitely paid off. Furthermore, the event wouldn’t have happened without the 25+ volunteers that helped out with all aspects of the event, in addition to all the auction-item donors, our speaker Jacky Essombe, the dancers, drummers, and all who attended. Thank you!

Pictures from the evening can be found here (Thanks to our photographers Alessandro and Ashton):

Interested helping to organize Halala 2010? We are already forming the steering committee for next year’s event. Please email sfu@ewb.ca if you’re interested!<
