President's Message
Thank you for exploring the Simon Fraser University Chapter website!
EWB-SFU exists for many reasons. It provides a venue in which university students from any discipline can engage themselves in issues of international development. It spreads awareness among engineering professionals and contributing members of society about the importance of being globally and socially conscious. It exposes high school students to issues of food security and safe water. Most importantly, it provides a proactive vision where tangible steps can be taken to address the problems of the world.
Now in its fourth year, EWB-SFU is continuing to grow and expand. Last year, we experienced an unprecedented amount of growth, literally doubling everything we did. Our executives expanded from a team of eight to twenty dedicated people. We had great success with our High School Outreach Program, reaching 150 students in four months. We provided three lectures in two first year engineering courses, exposing every single first year student to EWB and issues of doing development work overseas. And once again, we have made a direct impact in a developing community by sending a student volunteer to work on a development project overseas. Combined with our past involvement in the Scala Program, a computer literacy and education program in the Philippines, and our past contribution with Light up the World Foundation, we are on track to another great year.
Extreme poverty and hunger is a form of social injustice, not a social norm. I urge you to learn about issues related to poverty eradication, and what governments and organizations are doing to better the lives of people suffering from hunger or easily preventable diseases. It is only with an informed and educated public that change can take place, and I hope you will be part of this change - a global movement to eliminate the injustices of this world.
